As we age, life naturally evolves. What once seemed essential might lose its significance, replaced by an appreciation for simplicity and authenticity. In my 50s, I began a journey of letting go — shedding things that no longer served me. Now, in my 60s, I can say with confidence that these changes have brought me a profound sense of happiness and peace. Here are the ten things I gave up that have transformed my life.
1. Uncomfortable Clothing
Gone are the days of sacrificing comfort for fashion. I no longer wear tight clothes, painful shoes, or anything that restricts my movements. Elastic waistbands, soft fabrics, and practical footwear are my staples now. Life’s too short to spend it fussing with ill-fitting outfits. Comfort is the new chic!
2. Rushing Around
I’ve stopped living life at breakneck speed. When my children were young, I constantly rushed from one obligation to another, and it left me frazzled. Now, I savor the slower pace. Life flows more smoothly when I’m not perpetually in a hurry, and it’s been a gift to my mental and physical health.
3. Apologizing Excessively
I used to say “sorry” for everything — even when it wasn’t my fault. Now, I’ve embraced the fact that I have just as much right to take up space as anyone else. No more apologizing for being myself.
4. Saying Yes When I Want to Say No
Learning to say “no” has been life-changing. I no longer feel obligated to say yes to every request or favor, especially when it conflicts with my priorities. “No” is a complete sentence, and it’s one I’ve learned to use with confidence.
5. Doomscrolling
Scrolling endlessly through social media or news feeds can drain hours of your day and fill your mind with negativity. While I still battle this habit occasionally, I’ve made a conscious effort to step away and focus on the present moment.
6. Buying Stuff I Don’t Need
I’ve stopped impulsively buying things, especially late-night purchases influenced by online ads. Instead, I focus on decluttering and creating a more minimalist lifestyle. It’s freeing, and my wallet thanks me!
7. Watching the News Constantly
While I stay informed, I no longer immerse myself in 24/7 news cycles. It’s overwhelming and often repetitive. Now, I limit my exposure to important updates and avoid unnecessary stress.
8. Seeking Validation from Others
In my 50s, I realized that my instincts and judgment are enough. I still value others’ input, but I trust myself to make the final call. Letting go of the need for constant validation has been incredibly empowering.
9. Beating Myself Up
We all make mistakes, but I’ve stopped replaying them in my mind and criticizing myself for not being perfect. I’ve embraced my humanity and learned to forgive myself. It’s a work in progress, but it’s made a huge difference in my happiness.
10. Worrying About Growing Older
When I turned 50, I feared the changes that aging might bring. But as I’ve entered my 60s, I’ve discovered that growing older can be liberating. My energy is returning, my mind feels clearer, and I’ve let go of the fear. Life is too short to waste on worry.
