Here are the lessons I’d share with you:

1. Invest Early and Often

Start a Roth IRA now and learn how to invest. Don’t just let the money sit in an account; make it grow. I opened my Roth IRA at 54 and wasted precious time not investing the money. By the time I figured it out, it had grown, but it could have been worth so much more if I had started at 25. Compound interest is powerful—use it to your advantage.

2. Don’t Cash Out Your 401(k)

When I retired, I cashed out my 401(k) and paid a massive 45% income tax bill. That single decision set me back significantly. Leave your retirement savings alone, let them grow, and avoid withdrawing large sums unless absolutely necessary. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

3. Live Within Your Means

Debt can become a heavy anchor. Don’t pile it up, no matter how tempting it might seem. Save for emergencies, and always budget for unexpected expenses. I once missed a single credit card payment, and the debt ballooned out of control. That mistake taught me that financial discipline is key to freedom.

4. Protect Your Assets

Your home is one of your biggest assets—cherish and protect it. If I could go back, I’d be more strategic about how I used my home equity and better prepared for market fluctuations.

5. Health is Wealth

Prioritize your health. The medical expenses that come with aging can drain your finances. I never expected pancreatic cancer or the toll it would take on my savings. Staying healthy not only gives you a better quality of life but also protects your financial future.

6. Pursue Your Passion

Don’t wait to pursue a career or hobby you’re passionate about. I regret not following through with my music when I was younger. If you love something, find a way to make it a part of your life. Even if it’s just a hobby, passion brings joy and fulfillment that no paycheck can replace.

7. Plan for the Long Term

Life is unpredictable, but planning makes the journey smoother. Save for retirement, build an emergency fund, and think ahead. I didn’t expect Social Security to be so little or that I’d still need to work in my later years. Plan now so you can enjoy your future without constant worry.

8. Embrace Change and Stay Active

Retirement isn’t what it seems. Sitting around can lead to boredom and even regret. Keep working as long as you can, or find ways to stay engaged. A fulfilling life is one where you keep learning, contributing, and growing.

9. Help, But Don’t Overextend Yourself

It’s okay to care for others, but don’t let it come at the cost of your own well-being. I often offered financial help to friends and family, not realizing I was putting my own future at risk. Be generous, but know your limits.

10. Appreciate the Present

Life is full of unexpected twists, but don’t let them define you. Approach life with curiosity instead of despair. When I stopped looking back with regret and started seeing life as an adventure, everything changed.
