Exploring Affordable Tech at the Canton Fair 2025

Introduction

We’re a full-time travel couple from the UK, currently exploring Guangzhou, China, at the Canton Fair—the world’s biggest and oldest trade fair. This year, we dove into the Consumer Electronics section to uncover the latest tech innovations for 2025. Our mission? To find high-quality, affordable alternatives to pricey brands like Apple, DJI, and GoPro, and to see why China is often called the “world’s factory.” From action cameras to smartwatches, power banks to touchscreen laptops, here’s what we discovered.

Action Cameras: Affordable Alternatives to DJI and GoPro

We started our journey with action cameras, comparing them to our DJI Action 5. At one booth, we found SJC, a leading action camera brand offering 4K HD cameras with 16 FPS and waterproof features. Their demo model, similar to a DJI, was priced at $120–130 USD, significantly cheaper than DJI’s $170–200 range. Another model caught our eye at just $90 USD—still 4K and waterproof, with a front screen for selfies.

These cameras are best-sellers in Russia, South Korea, and Hungary, and their quality impressed us. We tested the sound and video playback, which connected seamlessly to a phone app. For travel vloggers like us, who rely on expensive gear, these affordable options could be game-changers.

Power Banks: Wireless and Budget-Friendly

Next, we explored power banks, a daily essential for travelers. One company showcased a range of options, including a 10,000 mAh wireless power bank that can charge a phone 1.5 times. Priced at just $7.50 USD, it’s a steal compared to similar products in the UK, where wireless chargers are less common. The convenience of wire-free charging makes these perfect for life on the road.

Touchscreen Laptops: MacBook Rivals at a Fraction of the Cost

We stumbled upon a booth displaying laptops from a brand called Chewy, based in Shenzhen. Their touchscreen laptop, resembling a MacBook, was priced at an astonishing $320 USD. A smaller model was even cheaper at $132 USD. Both run on Windows and offer features comparable to high-end brands. The sleek design and affordability left us speechless—China truly delivers “better and cheaper.”

Smartwatches and Smart Rings: Apple Watch Competitors

Smartwatches were a highlight, especially since we’re used to splurging on Apple Watches. At one stand, we found stylish smartwatches priced at just $20–30 USD (200 RMB). These watches track steps, sleep, heart rate, and more, all through a phone app—matching Apple’s core features. They even come in various designs, including round and rectangular faces, and are fully waterproof.

We also discovered smart rings, a new trend we hadn’t explored before. Priced at 100 RMB ($15 USD), these rings monitor activity, calories, sleep, heart rate, and offer 35 sport modes. With wireless charging and a sleek design in gold, silver, or black, they’re a chic, budget-friendly alternative to fitness trackers. We ended up buying three smartwatches (two black, one pink) for 100 RMB each, perfect for gifting to family.

AI and Translation Devices: Cutting-Edge but Pricey

We were intrigued by I Fly Tech’s AI-powered translation devices, which automatically translate languages like Chinese to English. Compact enough to fit in your pocket, these devices are ideal for travelers. However, at 399 RMB (around $60 USD), they felt pricey compared to other finds. While advanced, we decided to move on and explore more budget-friendly options.

Why China Excels: Quality, Affordability, and Innovation

The Canton Fair showcased why China leads as a global manufacturing hub. From action cameras to laptops, the products we saw rivaled Western brands in quality but were far more affordable. Vendors were friendly, eager to explain features, and never pushy, making the experience enjoyable. We even made friends with people from Algeria, who invited us to visit—a reminder of the fair’s global reach.

Our Haul and Final Thoughts

We walked away with three smartwatches and a newfound appreciation for China’s tech scene. The Canton Fair is a treasure trove for anyone seeking innovative, cost-effective gadgets. Whether you’re a travel vlogger, a tech enthusiast, or just looking to save money, China’s offerings are hard to beat. We’re already planning to visit Shenzhen, the heart of China’s tech industry, and can’t wait to share more from the fair.
