From Passive Consumption to Active Creation: Mastering the Art of Learning
Learning over Content Consuming | Studying like a PhD

In today’s world, we spend an enormous amount of time consuming content—articles, notes, lectures—yet most of it slips away. We retain little of what we learn, and we produce even less. As students and professionals, we tend to absorb massive amounts of information passively: we read, we listen, we watch. But how often do we challenge ourselves to create something new from what we’ve learned or to build upon the knowledge we’ve gained?
The truth is, not as often as we should.
This raises an important question: Should we focus on learning first and then creating, or should we dive straight into creating from the start? One valuable insight I’ve gained during my PhD is this: if you cannot reproduce an argument, a formula, or a concept, you haven’t fully learned it. The act of creation forces you to engage deeply with the material and reflect on what you’ve truly retained.
The Power of Creation in Learning
When you begin creating, you quickly uncover gaps in your understanding. For instance, trying to explain a new concept or reproduce an argument can be surprisingly challenging if your comprehension is incomplete. This realization alone is transformative, as it reveals the areas that need more attention.
Creating doesn’t just help you learn—it compels you to internalize information on a deeper level. Whether it’s writing a blog post, summarizing a lecture, or even crafting a new argument based on existing knowledge, the act of creation cements the material in your mind.
Here are some practical strategies to help you transition from passive learning to active creation.
Strategies for Active Learning
1. Learn Through Creation
Make it a habit to engage actively with what you’ve learned. After reading an article, attending a lecture, or listening to a podcast, take time to write down key points, summarize them in your own words, or reflect on the material. Even better, use your notes to create something new, such as a blog post, a presentation, or even a teaching resource.
For instance, during my time as a researcher, I began taking detailed notes after lectures. Later, I used these notes to create blog posts for my neuroscience website. This habit not only reinforced my understanding but also allowed me to share knowledge with others.
2. Focus on Active Learning Techniques
Passive learning, such as merely listening to lectures or reading without reflection, does little to deepen understanding. Instead, adopt active learning techniques, such as:
Summarizing what you’ve learned.
Reproducing arguments or concepts in your own words.
Teaching the material to someone else.
3. Engage with Experts
When diving into a new topic, identify the leading experts in the field. Consume their work—read their research papers, watch their lectures, or listen to their podcasts. Collect all this information in a central space, such as Notion or Evernote, and critically analyze their findings. Ask yourself: What’s missing? What should they explore next? This critical engagement transforms you from a passive consumer into an active participant in the field.
4. The Feynman Technique
The Feynman Technique, inspired by the renowned physicist Richard Feynman, is a powerful tool for mastering concepts. Here’s how it works:
Write down everything you know about a topic in a simple, organized format, such as a mind map.
Identify areas where your understanding is incomplete.
Teach the concept to someone else (or explain it to yourself aloud).
Teaching forces you to simplify complex ideas and pinpoint areas that need improvement. This process not only deepens your knowledge but also improves your ability to communicate effectively.
5. Apply Your Learning to Real-Life Scenarios
To make your learning meaningful, apply it to real-world examples. For instance, if you’re studying neuroscience, explore case studies of people with neurological disorders or brain injuries. Summarize the cases and reflect on how your theoretical knowledge applies to these scenarios.
In my research on schizophrenia, I’ve found it helpful to read personal accounts of individuals living with the disorder. Books like The Center Cannot Hold by Elyn Saks provide invaluable insights that deepen my understanding of the human side of mental health.
The Benefits of Active Learning
Active learning not only enhances retention but also fosters curiosity and creativity. As you uncover gaps in your knowledge, you may even identify unanswered questions that could inspire future research or projects.
By shifting your focus from passive consumption to active creation, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of any subject and gain the confidence to produce meaningful work.
