Lessons Learned Over 64 Years: Insights for a Fulfilling Life

Reflections on a Life Well-Lived: Timeless Lessons for Inner Peace and Happiness

Over the course of my 64 years, I have experienced countless moments of joy, struggle, and personal growth. Today, I want to share a few lessons that have profoundly shaped my life. These are insights I wish I had learned earlier, and I hope they resonate with you.

1. Believe People When They Show You Who They Are

Maya Angelou’s quote, “If someone shows you who they are, believe them,” has been a guiding principle for me. When someone shows you they don’t care about you, don’t waste your time trying to convince yourself or them otherwise. Focus your energy on people who genuinely love and care about you. Time is too precious to spend it on relationships that aren’t reciprocal.

2. You Can’t Change People

Change must come from within. No amount of nagging, pleading, or begging can make someone alter their behavior unless they have the deep, personal desire to do so. Whether it’s an adult child struggling with addiction or a partner exhibiting abusive tendencies, understand that transformation is their journey, not yours to enforce. Instead, focus on fostering your own growth and well-being.

3. Happiness Comes from Within

Happiness isn’t found in external achievements or possessions—not in a bigger house, a new relationship, or more money. It comes from appreciating the present and cultivating gratitude for the little joys in life. Every morning, I start with a gratitude list to ground myself in positivity. Try it; it’s a transformative habit.

4. Worrying Changes Nothing

Worrying doesn’t fix problems; it only steals your peace in the present. If you find yourself caught in negative thought cycles, consider reading Ask and It Is Given. This book has provided me with valuable techniques for redirecting my mind and embracing a more positive outlook. Let go of worry and trust that life will unfold as it should.

5. Not Everyone Will Like You—And That’s Okay

It’s impossible to please everyone. Some people simply won’t like you, and that’s their prerogative. Focus on the people who appreciate and support you. Wasting energy on people who don’t is a recipe for unhappiness. Let go, move on, and embrace the relationships that bring you joy.

6. Inner Strength is Essential During Tough Times

While relationships and community can offer support, ultimately, we must rely on our inner strength to navigate life’s challenges. When my father passed away in a car accident, my belief in a higher power and life after death gave me solace. Whether you call it God, Source, or the Universe, faith in something greater can provide peace and resilience during life’s darkest moments.

7. Do What Truly Makes You Happy

Don’t let social media dictate your definition of happiness. Whether it’s reading a good book, traveling, or simply enjoying a cup of tea, embrace the activities that bring you joy. Happiness is deeply personal—it’s not about following trends or comparing your life to others’.

8. The Law of Attraction Works

Discovering the Law of Attraction at 60 changed my life. I shifted from being consumed by worry to living a life of peace and positivity. The energy you put into the world reflects back to you. Focus on love and positivity, and you’ll attract the same in return.
