Meet Beck, better known as The Nomad Mother. She and her son, Willow, live full-time in a Ford Transit van, embracing a lifestyle of freedom, minimalism, and adventure. While she also owns a boat, the van is her true home, offering mobility, practicality, and a sense of independence that suits her life perfectly.

Finding a Different Path

Beck’s journey into van life started out of necessity and quickly became a lifestyle she couldn’t imagine giving up. She had lived in London, renting a small space for £800 a month, but the high costs and limited freedom pushed her to find an alternative. Instead of continuing to struggle with rent, she made the decision to buy a van, converting it into a cozy, functional living space.

“I just couldn’t justify spending so much money on rent for a small room,” she explains. “I wanted something that allowed me to move freely and live on my own terms.”

Her choice wasn’t entirely surprising. With Roman Gypsy heritage on both sides of her family, a nomadic way of life seemed to be in her blood. Even as a teenager, she dreamed of living in a caravan, and now, years later, she has created a lifestyle that aligns with her deepest instincts.

The Freedom of Van Life

One of the biggest advantages of van living, according to Beck, is financial freedom. Without the burden of rent or a mortgage, she has much more flexibility in her finances.

“I see people struggling with mortgages and rent, and I just don’t have that stress,” she says. “I might not have loads of cash, but I don’t need to chase money just to pay bills. I can spend on experiences and enjoy my life.”

Another perk is the ability to travel wherever and whenever she wants. She can visit friends, stay near loved ones, and adjust her travel plans based on her budget.

“I just figure out where I want to go, check my fuel budget, and plan accordingly. It’s that simple.”

A Van Built for Comfort and Practicality

Beck has thoughtfully designed her van to maximize both space and comfort. The van, a Ford Transit Mark 6, includes a raised fixed bed, a compact but functional kitchen, storage solutions, and even a small space for Willow to play.

“I originally planned for a pull-out sofa bed, but I quickly realized a fixed bed was way more practical,” she explains. “With a child, I didn’t want to be converting my bed every night.”

The interior follows a Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic—simple, cozy, and cost-effective. She used affordable materials like shuttering ply, creating a stylish yet budget-friendly space. “Let’s go cheap but make it look cool” became her design motto.

Balancing Motherhood and Van Life

Living in a van as a single mother has its challenges, but Beck has found ways to make it work. She cherishes the intimate time spent with Willow, where mornings can be slow and relaxed without the rush of a traditional home setup.

“When we wake up, he plays around while I stay in bed for a little longer. If we lived in a house, that wouldn’t be possible—he’d be running all over the place.” she laughs.

She acknowledges that some people might find her lifestyle unconventional, especially with a child, but she insists they are happy, warm, and living a fulfilling life.

“I don’t know how single parents manage with the high cost of living. This way, I have control, and we have freedom.”

Future Plans and New Adventures

Beck’s journey doesn’t stop here. While she loves her van, she’s already thinking about the next step—possibly upgrading to a seven-and-a-half-ton horsebox to convert into a larger living space.

“It’s like a boat, but I can move it wherever I want,” she says excitedly.

With supportive parents and a growing confidence in her ability to adapt, she knows she can make it happen.

“This lifestyle has been a slow journey of learning and adapting. Since 2016, I’ve figured out how to make it work—where to wash clothes, how to handle different seasons, and how to adjust my setup.”

The Downsides of Van Life

Of course, van life isn’t perfect. There are inconveniences like emptying the toilet, refilling water, and managing waste disposal.

“Those are the little things that can be annoying,” she admits. “In a house, you just take the trash out or turn on a tap. In a van, you have to figure it all out yourself.”

But these minor hassles are outweighed by the freedom and simplicity of her lifestyle.
