Introduction
Thinking about moving to Dallas, Texas? You’re not alone. Dallas is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States thanks to its booming job market, affordable cost of living, and diverse neighborhoods.
But as exciting as it is, relocation comes with a mountain of tasks: utilities, DMV paperwork, voter registration, and endless packing lists. That’s why we’ve put together the ultimate Dallas relocation checklist to help you stay on track.
Why Dallas Is One of the Top Cities to Relocate To
Dallas-Fort Worth consistently ranks as one of the top metro areas for inbound moves in the U.S. With a strong economy, great schools, and plenty of cultural attractions, it’s no wonder people are making the move.
But with more people relocating, there’s also more competition for movers, rental housing, and utility appointments—making early planning essential.
Your Step-by-Step Dallas Relocation Checklist
1. Before You Move
Declutter and donate items you don’t need.
Research and book movers or a truck early (summer is peak moving season).
Transfer school and job-related paperwork.
2. Two to Four Weeks Out
Utilities: Set up Dallas Water Utilities, choose an electricity provider on PowerToChoose.org, and arrange natural gas service with Atmos Energy.
Change of Address: Submit at USPS Change of Address.
Healthcare: Transfer prescriptions and notify doctors.
3. Moving Week
Pack an “essentials box” with IDs, chargers, medications, and tools.
Take meter readings at your old home.
Confirm movers and parking arrangements.
Do a final walkthrough before leaving.
4. After You Arrive in Dallas
Update your driver’s license & vehicle registration within 30 days at the Texas DPS and Dallas County Tax Office.
Register to vote through Dallas County Elections.
Update insurance (auto, renters, or homeowners).
Meet your neighbors and explore your new community.
